As members of this community, we are committed to the highest ethical standards in carrying out our mission in the areas of learning and teaching, research and activities in our immediate and wider community. The documents, procedures and standards we have adopted provide us with guidelines for ethical action at work and in the daily life of this community.
The Code of Ethics aims to build and maintain high professional and ethical standards among members of the University community, strengthen loyalty, ensure the transparency and social responsibility of the University's activities, and encourage freedom of research, teaching, and learning, as well as promote a positive public image of the University.
Members of the University community are bound mainly to these ethical values:
Honesty
In our work and actions within and outside the University, the members of the University community strive for honesty.
Excellence
We consciously, and at every step, strive to achieve excellence in our work.
Responsibility
A responsible attitude towards work and our immediate and wider community is demonstrated by complete and regular fulfilment of work obligations, by personal initiative and by a readiness to engage in other assignments when necessary.
Respect for personal integrity
Members of the University community strive for respect for personal integrity, which is reflected in the ethics of our actions, respect for others and professional excellence.
Openness
The University is based on creativity and new ideas, therefore openness is one of the key virtues of members of the University community, who allow diversity and accept the new in a critical and responsible way.
1.General
Article 1
The implementation of the mission of the University in all areas of its operation requires a common commitment to the fundamental values of the University as well as ethical action in all activities of the University. In this spirit, the Code of Ethics of the University of Primorska follows our commitment to act ethically, legally and professionally within and outside the University.
Article 2
All members of the University community, including University and faculty leadership, teachers and researchers, students, professional and other staff, and all those collaborating with the University, are bound to the Code of Ethics of the University of Primorska.
Article 3
Basic guidelines at work for the members of the University community are to strive for the realization of the fundamental values of the University and to follow its mission in accordance with the accepted ethical values. The basic values of the University of Primorska are quality, autonomy, freedom, loyalty and openness.
Article 4
Members of the University community uphold the mission of the University by fully and consistently performing their duties, by their responsible participation in University bodies, and by acting in accordance with the University’s fundamental values outside its environment.
Article 5
The members of the University community exercise a responsible working attitude by following and contributing to development in their field of research even when the results will not directly affect their remuneration or career advancement.
Article 6
Tolerance by members of the University community is manifested through critical tolerance of diversity, which does not lead to indifference and apathy.
Article 7
All members of the academic community are expected to behave ethically in accordance with the law and adopted University documents. No illegal or unethical conduct can be justified on the basis of established practice or the achievement of "higher goals".
Article 8
Loyalty to the University is expressed in the general commitment to respecting its values and raising the University’s public image in all areas of activities as well as when acting publicly outside the University.
1. Pedagogical work
Article 9
Academic freedom is the fundamental right of teachers and students. Teachers exercise their academic freedom through responsible teaching, research, and creative activities, which are aligned with the ethical and fundamental values of the University.
For students, academic freedom means academic autonomy through responsible study and personal initiative in line with the ethical and fundamental values of the University.
Article 10
The aim of instruction is to disseminate knowledge and encourage creative, critical, and responsible thinking. Teachers impart knowledge based on scientific findings and empirical evidence.
Article 11
Teachers and students form an indivisible community. With their availability and commitment to pedagogical work, teachers assure uninterrupted study for the students. Students contribute to the quality and continuous improvement of the pedagogical process through their conscientious and responsible work.
III. Scientific and research work
Article 12
In addition to the regulations in force, researchers at the University of Primorska adhere to internationally recognized ethical rules and standards that apply to their specific fields of research. This is of particular importance in biomedical research involving human subjects and tissues, as well as other research involving human beings in which the results may affect individuals’ status and reputation.
Article 13
Research activities are based on research freedom, academic freedom, personal integrity, and research honesty.
Article 14
Research honesty involves consistent respect of authorship, correct recognition and citation of other scholars’ research achievements, the consistent use of appropriate research methods, fair and professionally irreproachable interpretation of results and honest data reporting, and objective examination of research hypotheses.

Article 15
When speaking or acting as private persons outside the University, members of the University community respect the values and ethical standards as defined in this Code.
Article 16
Political activism or any other form of propaganda on University premises, and exploitation of the teaching process or University funds for political or similar non-academic purposes, represent a breach of this Code.
Article 17
Members of the University community may not perform activities outside the University if these activities hinder the normal course of their teaching or research process at the University of Primorska.
Article 18
Members of the University community have the right to join political parties, professional and interest associations, religious communities, and other civil society organizations, and may express their own opinions as private persons, under their own name. When they speak as private persons they take into account potential conflicts of interest so that their activities do not conflict with work at the University.
1. Performing leadership functions at the University
Article 19
Members of the University community who perform leadership functions at the university and its members act in such a way that their ethical conduct can set an example for others.
Article 20
Leaders perform their functions in the spirit of the academic tradition with dedication, responsibility and in accordance with ethical values, while also taking into account the long-term effects of the measures they propose and introduce.
1. Conduct towards University resources
Article 21
Members of the University community are obliged to use the equipment, facilities, and financial means they are entrusted with in accordance with their proper purpose and with due care and attention. They must strive for optimum use of these resources and for the greatest possible benefit to the community.
Article 22
Members of the University community do not use University resources for private gain.
VII. The Ethics Committee
Article 23
The Senate of the University of Primorska has the right to appoint the Ethics Committee and define its respective functions, composition and mandate.
VIII. Transitional provisions
Article 24
The Code of Ethics of the University of Primorska shall enter into force on the day of publication.
