UP establishes the Centre for Responsible Artificial Intelligence

The Senate of the University of Primorska (UP), in its 15th ordinary session on December 18, 2024, established the Center for Responsible Artificial Intelligence (CeResAI UP), which will be the central organizational unit for interdisciplinary, sustainable and ethical work in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). The initiative follows a number of UP activities in the field of AI, including the creation of position papers on the use of AI and cooperation with international institutions and strategic centers. Dr. Ernest Ženko (UP FHŠ) has been appointed head of CeResAI UP.

AI, including generative artificial intelligence (GenUI) such as ChatGPT, brings revolutionary changes and many opportunities, but also challenges in terms of ethics, bias, intellectual property and security. CeResAI UP will provide a systematic and long-term approach to understanding the impact of AI on society, contributing to the creation of a just and sustainable future.

CeResAI UP's main objectives

• Education and training

- Organization of courses and workshops for students, teachers, researchers and the public.

- Promoting AI literacy and responsible use of technology.

• Research

- Research to improve access to knowledge, digital transformation and solutions to societal challenges.

• International cooperation

- Networking with researchers and institutions from all over the world to solve complex problems together.

• Support for companies and the general public

- Working with industry to deploy AI solutions and foster innovation.

- Raising public awareness of AI technologies and bridging the technology gap.

• Ethics and social development

- Developing fair and transparent AI solutions and ensuring compliance with ethical principles and legal considerations.

Slovenia and the entire region lack institutions that fully integrate research, ethics and the practical use of AI. CeResAI UP will fill this gap and, through its interdisciplinary approach and cooperation with companies, NGOs and society, will become an important factor in the development of the region and the promotion of Slovenia as a center for the responsible use of AI.

The UP Center for Responsible Artificial Intelligence will therefore contribute to this:

• interdisciplinary solutions in the field of the University's activities;
• the development of an innovation ecosystem in the region
• promoting Slovenia as an important country in the field of responsible and ethical use of artificial
• intelligence and improving the quality of life through human-centered technological solutions.

The establishment of CeResAI UP is a strategic decision that will have long-term benefits for the university, the region and society as a whole.
