RESEARCH ACHIEVEMENTS IN THE YEAR 2022
In 2022, the University of Primorska obtained two adapted projects of the European Research Council (ERC): "N1-0296: Smooth isogeometric spaces of concatenations over multipart domains" by Prof. Vito Vitrih and "N6-0297: From sea to sea" supported by Assoc. Prof. Martine Ble膷i膰 Kavur.
In 2022, UP also acquired new ARRS international cooperation projects, "N5-0312: Green transition and sustainability of the Common Agricultural Policy: Hungarian-Slovenian comparison" under the leadership of Prof. Štefan Bojnec, and "N6-0292: Osor beyond myth" Assoc. Prof. Martine Ble膷i膰 Kavur and "N1-0281: Influence of the biotope on genetic variability, the fitness of individuals and embryonic diapause in the European roe deer" under the direction of Prof. Elene Bu啪an, which will begin to be implemented in 2023.
Anna Sandak, PhD, head of the research group at InnoRenew CoE and professor at UP, won a project to strengthen her independent research career. With the project "Bioinspired living skin for architecture ARCHI-SKIN", she and her team will develop engineering living materials that are capable of interacting with the environment and adapting and responding to changes in it. Doctoral students studying in the program Renewable resources for healthy built environments at UP FAMNIT are also involved in the project.
Read moreIn 2022, the implementation of 4 projects in the expiring Obzorje 2020 program continued. In two of them UP acts as a leading institution, namely in the project "STEP CHANGE: Science Transformation in Europe through Citizens involvement in HeAlth, conservation and energy research" and "InnoRenew CoE: Renewable materials and healthy environments research and innovation centre of excellence (InnoRenew CoE Phase 2)'. To upgrade this project, UP and InnoRenew CoE submitted an application with the acronym "InnoRenew Beyond" to the third Teaming call in the Obzorje framework program, in a consortium with two other Slovenian partners (ZAG and ZVKDS) and under the mentorship of the University of Helsinki (Shanghai ranking 92). The project has acquired the stamp of excellence.
In 2022, two major projects started to be implemented in the Horizon Europe program.
The "BGE: Biodiversity Genomic Europe" project, whose purpose is to slow down the extinction of species and the decline of biodiversity worldwide, using genetic and genomic approaches. 33 partner organizations from 29 countries participate in the project led by the Naturalis Biodiversity Center from the Netherlands, which are partners of two large consortia: ERGA (European Reference Genome Atlas) and BIOSCAN (International Barcode of Life). UP acts as the coordinator of the Slovenian ERGA consortium in the project.
In 2022, the COST action was carried out, led by UP "CA18201 - An integrated approach to conservation of threatened plants for the 21st Century", in which 67 members from 36 countries are participating.
The project for the operation of the Career Center "Comprehensive program of personal and professional growth of UP (UP personality growth)" and student projects from the public tender "Project work to gain practical experience and knowledge of students in the working environment" were obtained, which will be co-financed from ESS.
In 2022, the renovation of the Livade 1.0 facility was completed and the educational and research process moved to the renovated facility. This contributed significantly to the even faster development of UP, especially in the field of natural sciences, sports and health.
In cooperation with the centre of excellence InnoRenew CoE, UP also carried out activities for the restoration of the monument-protected complex Servitski monastery.
In 2022, UP participated in the research infrastructure consortia it joined in the previous two years:
- a national consortium of biobank research infrastructure BBMRI.SI, which is a full member of the European consortium BBMRI-ERIC "Biobanking and BioMolecular resources Research Infrastructure - European Research Infrastructure Consortium",
- a consortium of the Slovenian genetic/genomic and taxonomic infrastructure ERGA.SI "European Reference Genome Atlas SI",
- the National Consortium for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Research LifeWatch-SI, which is a full member of the European LifeWatch ERIC "e-Science and Technology European Infrastructure for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Research European Research Infrastructure Consortium",
- Slovenian consortium FNH-RI-Si "Slovenian node of the European Research Infrastructure for the research areas of food, nutrition and health - Food Nutrition Health Research Infrastructure".
In 2022, UP joined the Slovenian national node E-RIHS.SI "European Research Infrastructure for Heritage Science", which is included in the European E-RIHS ERIC consortium.
The consortium ERGA (European Reference Genome Atlas) and BIOSCAN (International Barcode of Life) acquired the Obzorje Evropa project "BGE: Biodiversity Genomic Europe", worth EUR 21 million, which unites 33 partner organizations from 29 countries. UP acts as the coordinator of the Slovenian ERGA consortium in the project.
In 2022, UP established cooperation with the company Sincrotron in Trieste (Italy), where, as part of the project "Long term effects of different dietary protocols on determinants of health in patients' lymphocytes", they allowed access to an electron accelerator - equipment that is not available in Slovenia.
RESEARCH ACHIEVEMENTS IN THE YEAR 2021
In 2021, UP was ranked 801/1000 in Physical Sciences in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2022.
UP hosted renowned names and important scientific meetings – the 8ECM was not only the most important scientific event in Slovenia in 2021 but also the biggest European Mathematical Congress to date.
UP researchers have significantly increased the number of publications in the international WoS and SCOPUS databases.
Read more361 papers were published in journals with an impact factor indexed by SCI, SSCI and A & HCI, i.e. 30% more than in 2020. The number of publications also increased 30% in the SCOPUS database.
In 2021, the number of articles included in the WoS database written in collaboration with researchers from other universities increased by 70% (151 articles in total). Our researchers cooperated with 54 universities, which are ranked 1-500 on ARWU – Academic Ranking of World Universities.
Elsevier, a global information analytics business, has created a publicly accessible database of more than 100,000 top scientists. There are 165 scientists coming from Slovenia on a single year impact scale for the most frequently cited authors in 2020, among them are researchers from UP Famnit and UP IAM,
Assoc. Prof. Martina Ble膷i膰 Kavur, PhD from UP FHŠ Department of Archaeology, is one of the authors of the article Large-scale migration into Britain during the Middle to Late Bronze Age, which was published in Nature, one of the most prestigious scientific journals in the world.
UP FTŠ – Turistica, with its presented project, stood alongside the other 13 organisations selected among more than 800 applicants within Google.org Impact Challenge for the countries of Central and Eastern Europe.

In 2020, UP researchers significantly increased the number of publications in WoS (+49%) and SCOPUS (+21%) compared to the previous year.
UP has successfully obtained the accreditation of a new doctoral interdisciplinary study program "Renewable materials for healthy built environments".
The humanistic scientific journal for research and theory of cultural heritage "Studia universitatis hereditati" has been included in two important international bibliographic databases, namely DOAJ and Erih Plus.

The increase in scientific production in 2020 can be partly attributed to the reduced activity of researchers in conducting studies due to specific epidemiological conditions and the consequent shift to writing and publishing already collected data.
In 2020, 89 articles included in the WoS database were co-authored with 18 universities that rank in the top 500 on the Shanghai scale.
The achievement of Assoc. prof. Vito Vitrih entitled "Isogeometric collocation over planar multipart domains" within the research program "P1 0404 Mathematical modeling and encryption: from theoretical concepts to everyday applications" was selected by ARRS in the selection of achievements Excellent in Science 2020.
Head of the Department of Psychology UP FAMNIT and head of the Slovenian Center for Suicide Research (UP IAM) prof. Diego De Leo became the most quoted Italian psychiatrist. In the broader field of neurology and psychology, it ranks 16th, and even third in terms of the number of citations (more than 75,000).
UP has successfully obtained the accreditation of a new doctoral interdisciplinary study program "Renewable materials for healthy built environments", and a new program in the field of suicidology and mental health is already being approved by SQAA. Both study programs are an upgrade of the past excellent research work and will contribute to the further development of the research activity. In 2019, UP obtained the accreditation of the doctoral study program Prevention for Health, which began in the academic year 2020/2021.

The Mathematical Scientific Journal "The Art of Discrete and Applied Mathematics - ADAM", published by UP FAMNIT and the Slovenian Society for Discrete and Applied Mathematics (SDAMS), was included in the SCOPUS database in 2020.
The quality of all eight scientific journals published by UP is also confirmed by the fact that all journals received co-financing from ARRS for 2021 and 2022. One of the journals are included in the list of journals indexed by SCI, in the SCOPUS database they are indexed three more magazines.
UP researchers also hold important positions in advisory bodies and associations.
Assoc. prof. Ana Grdovi膰 Gnip was appointed to the Economic Council of the Republic of Croatia. Prof. dr. At the invitation of the President of the Republic of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, Andreja Kutnar became a member of the Standing Consultative Committee on Climate Policy with the President of the Republic of Slovenia.
Assoc. prof. David B. DeVallance, Vice-Rector for UP Internationalization, was selected as the AIEA Presidential Fellow in the 2020/2021 academic year. It is a prestigious recognition and at the same time an opportunity for the AIEA, which is the only one that focuses exclusively on supporting members of university management in their work in the field of internationalization.
Several UP researchers are members or hold important positions and leadership positions in various international associations.

Ars Mathematica Contemporanea - AMC was rated Q1 on the SCImago Journal & Country Rank for all four areas it covers. For the fifth year in a row, the journal boasts the title of the most prestigious scientific journal published in Slovenia. In 2019, the Academica Turistica - Tourism and Innovation Journal was indexed in the SCOPUS database for the first year.
A new research program P1-0404 "Mathematical Modeling and Encryption: From Theoretical Concepts to Everyday Applications" has started under the leadership of prof. Enes Pasalic.
A core project (Research and Innovation Actions - RIA) in Horizon 2020 has been obtained, in which UP participates as a partner institution under the leadership of the Spanish University of Rovira i Virgili (ARWU 501-600). The project addresses the issue of social inclusion and sustainability in cities. UP has acquired the COST campaign for the protection of endangered plant species - CA18201 "An integrated approach to the conservation of endangered plants for the 21st Century", which will bring together researchers from 37 different countries.
The Center for Biemodern Studies, which operates at UP FH, was established. The Center upgrades its collaboration with researchers in the field of biemodern theory, which focuses on contemporary art and broader cultural and social events in contemporary global contexts. The Center for Biemodern Studies was established to upgrade the existing cooperation with researchers in the field of biemodern theory.
In 2019, preparations were made for the 8th European Mathematical Congress co-organized by UP, UL FMF, UL PEF, UL FPP, UM FNM, IMFM, JSI and the company Abelium.

The well-established international mathematical SCI journal Ars Mathematica Contemporanea (AMC), published by UP since 2010, was joined in 2017 by the new scientific international journal The Art of Discrete and Applied Mathematics (ADAM) with its first issue. number in 2018.
A novelty in 2018 is the resumption of the scientific journal Bulletin: Economics, Organization, Informatics in Health Care, which was last published in 2010. The Bulletin is a Slovenian professional journal that includes three areas in health care - economics, organization and informatics. In 2018, the first issue of the magazine in e-edition was published.
The Academica Turistica - Tourism and Innovation Journal, published by UP, was successfully included in the Scopus database in 2018.
In 2018, the Center for Cryptography was established, which in the coming years will develop into the main and central Slovenian research and expert centre in the field of cryptography.
As part of the NUVOLAK 2 project, UP opened the first entrepreneurial-innovation laboratory in the academic sphere, INNOlab.
For the needs of the pedagogical and research activity of UP FAMNIT and the research activity of UP IAM in April 2018, UP realized the purchase of the facility "Stara pošta" at Glagoljaška 8 in Koper, where the faculty has been operating since its establishment. In the summer months of 2018, the premises were partially renovated and new lecture halls, computers, offices and cabinets were acquired.
In 2018, activities began for the purchase of equipment within the InnoRenew CoE project, for the upgrade of some existing laboratories and the establishment of 6 more interdisciplinary research environments (laboratories). The total value of the funds provided for the establishment of laboratories within the project is 3.5 million euros. The purchase of state-of-the-art research equipment for UP represents an important step in the development and opens the door to new challenges in the field of research.
UP is also active in the UNESCO UNITWIN network and works closely with the Municipality of Piran, where it is based,

One of the most important scientific achievements in the development of UP, which is of strategic importance for the development of the coastal region and Slovenia, its economic growth, international visibility and competitiveness, is the establishment and operation of the InnoRenew Center of Excellence, which increases the international competitiveness of Slovenian woodworking. economy.

In 2015, the new Livade 1.0 building and the renovated premises in the Galeb building were handed over for use. With the help of successful candidacy for public tenders, major investments were made in the purchase of state-of-the-art high-tech research equipment, which in the future will enable quality scientific research work, especially in the field of science and technical disciplines. The total value of newly acquired research equipment in the last five years exceeds EUR 4.5 million. Before that, UP in the field of science and technical disciplines had virtually no research equipment of greater value (except a few pieces of equipment co-financed from the so-called ARRS Scheme Package).
RESEARCH ACHIEVEMENTS IN THE YEAR 2016
On 17 July 2016, the delegates of the European Mathematical Association awarded the organization of the 8th European Congress of Mathematics to Slovenian mathematical institutions.
In November 2016, a cooperation agreement was signed between UP and MV Lomonosov University of Moscow, which was the basis for the establishment of the Moscow Branch of MV Lomonosov Moscow State University in Koper at the end of 2017.
In November 2016, the University of Primorska and its partners obtained EUR 45 million for the breakthrough of the Slovenian wood industry.
The European Commission recognized the potential of the consortium of Slovenian partners led by the University of Primorska and awarded it almost 15 million euros in grants for the establishment of the Center of Excellence for Research and Innovation in Renewable Materials and Healthy Living Environment (InnoRenew CoE). The Government of the Republic of Slovenia has added another 30 million investment funds to this, which will ensure the conditions for the establishment and long-term operation of the centre.

On 17 July 2016, the delegates of the European Mathematical Association awarded the organization of the 8th European Congress of Mathematics to Slovenian mathematical institutions.
The candidacy led by UP under the leadership of prof. dr. Toma啪 Pisanski, defeated Spanish Sevilla in the voting. The European Mathematical Congress takes place every 4 years and is the second most prestigious event in the world of mathematics in addition to the World Mathematical Congress.
In November 2016, a cooperation agreement was signed between UP and MV Lomonosov University of Moscow, which was the basis for the establishment of the Moscow Branch of MV Lomonosov Moscow State University in Koper at the end of 2017. A joint educational and research centre of both universities was established. In the field of scientific research, the institute regularly organizes scientific research meetings and meetings with Slovenian-Russian businessmen.
