In 2024, the Zois Certificate of Recognition for important achievement in the field of environmental and animal ethics was given to .
JUSTIFICATIONThe Zois Recognition for significant achievements in the field of environmental and animal ethics will be presented to Assoc. Prof. Toma啪 Grušovnik, PhD from the University of Primorska, Faculty of Education. Grušovnik's research focuses on the relationship between humans, the environment, and animals. His work highlights the disconnect between our awareness of environmental problems and animal exploitation and our tendency to ignore these uncomfortable truths. This willful ignorance complicates efforts to address these issues. He emphasizes that merely providing information is insufficient; it is also essential to foster a genuine desire to learn about the world. Through his original thesis, he has contributed to a better understanding of the public's indifference toward the critical environmental challenges facing humanity.

In 2022, the Zois Award for outstanding achievement in the field of linear algebra was given to .
JUSTIFICATIONProf. Bojan Kuzma, PhD works at the University of Primorska and the Institute of Mathematics, Physics and Mechanics. Research in the field of linear algebra, which is also intertwined with operator theory, graph theory and abstract algebra. Linear algebra is essential for the modern world, as it is used in most scientific disciplines, both natural and social sciences. Mathematical objects can be studied directly, and it is often more prudent to study their symmetries, which represent the majority of Prof. Kuzma's works. Conservation problems in linear algebra do not have only theoretical value, but their applications can be found in other areas of mathematics and physics. Prof. Kuzma, PhD developed innovative approaches, which are important in solving more difficult, non-linear, conservation problems. Of his recent achievements, the study of commutativity graphs and orthogonality graphs on many mathematical structures should be mentioned. The key question is whether the graph itself uniquely determines the structure in question. Prof. Kuzma, PhD is the author of pioneering works that give an affirmative answer in many cases. With such graphs, which are generally infinite, it is also worth pointing out the calculations of their diameters, which surprisingly turn out to be finite. With his calculations, Prof. Kuzma, PhD together with other colleagues, provided the final graphological invariants, which enable the distinction between different objects in linear algebra.

In 2021, the Zois Award for outstanding achievement in algebraic graph theory was given to .
JUSTIFICATIONIstván Kovács, PhD works as a scientific advisor at the University of Primorska. He is one of the leading researchers of the program group, which is considered one of the two centers of algebraic graph theory in the world of mathematics, the other works at The University of Western Australia in Australia. Algebraic graph theory is a field of mathematics that is essential for the normal functioning of a high-tech society in the 21st century. Without algebraic graph theory and related cryptographic solutions to various communication efficiency and security issues, there would be no banking e-commerce, no smartphones, no everyday use of the World Wide Web today. Symmetrical combinatorial structures, which are closest to the conditions of safe and efficient communication and business, play a key role in all this. The symmetry of combinatorial structures is a question that István Kovács, PhD discusses in the context of algebraic graph theory. In doing so, he uses a variety of tools from other fields of mathematics, such as finite geometries, configurations, associative schemes, Schur rings, permutation group theory, and character theory. His research work, which he carries out in the framework of numerous domestic and international research projects, makes an important contribution to the development of all these areas of mathematics. Recently, his outstanding contribution to solving one of the most important open problems in algebraic graph theory, namely the problem of Cayley's isomorphism, should be highlighted. He is the author of solutions that are important guidelines in finding the final solution to this problem.
