Mathematics research combines individual strands of the following fields of mathematics: algebra, analysis, combinatorics with graph theory (discrete mathematics), cryptography, and probability calculus. At the same time, through mathematical modeling and computer simulations, it also reaches into the field of game theory. Research also addresses links with other mathematical disciplines, as well as applications in other branches of science. The UP FAMNIT research group is one of four leading research groups in the field of algebraic graph theory on a global scale - the remaining three groups are in China, Australia, and South Korea. Through this group, the Faculty has placed the University of Primorska on the world map of established research institutions. Furthermore, within the UP FAMNIT research group, the field of cryptography is one of the leading groups in Slovenia. Research is embedded in many international projects. Contact with foreign researchers is maintained through research visits (abroad and in Slovenia, especially in the framework of many bilateral cooperation projects), with active participation in international conferences and with their organization.
