- The development of research in UP
When the university was founded in 2003, research work took place at three faculties, two colleges and two research institutes. The most diversified was the scientific research activity at the research institute of the Scientific Research Center Koper (UP ZRS). In 2013, a unified research program and 40 projects financed by ARRS and other users of knowledge were implemented. Already in the first year of operation, UP implemented international projects co-financed from the 5th Framework Program, the Phare program and the Interreg IIIA and IIIB territorial cooperation programs.
The following year, 225 researchers within 10 research groups carried out 7 research programs and 49 ARRS research projects. 26 young researchers were trained, of which 7 were young researchers from the economy. In 2004, UP acquired an infrastructure program.
In 2009, the first project offices for technical and administrative support to researchers were established in the member states, mainly due to the needs of applying for and implementing new projects acquired by UP in cross-border cooperation programs. The EU Financial Perspective 2007-2013 was extremely successful for UP, as it coordinated 26 projects worth over EUR 19 million, including four strategic cross-border cooperation projects.
More and more research projects were acquired and implemented at the university, and in 2014 there were already 16 research groups with more than 500 researchers.
In 2015, UP opened the Livade 1.0 tower within the University Campus Livade, in which the appropriate infrastructure for the pedagogical and, above all, the research process has been established.
As the leading partner of the consortium, UP has acquired one of the ten approved projects in Horizon 2020 to establish a centre of excellence for research and innovation in the field of renewable materials and a healthy living environment (InnoRenew CoE). The project started in 2017.
In recent years, UP members have applied for and carried out research projects in various scientific fields, many of which have been carried out in cooperation with domestic and foreign well-known institutions. Our researchers have received numerous domestic and foreign recognitions and awards for their work.
